My Bead Table Blog Hop - Reveal !

Hi, I am here.

Can't say im alive, but im not quite dead either.

This is what happened : I work in a restaurant. We are entering the heavy season - with classes starting again and the high school nearby, there's a first batch of specials. Then another batch in october. We are introducing some new sandwiches we have to learn. November will slow down slightly only for december to bring it's own batches of specials and the pre-christmas madness.

That is bad enough, but survivable. I've done this for five years, after all. What's the problem ?

The problem is that my boss has four restaurant total. One here, and three in Quebec City. Two of the Quebec ones are seriously understaffed, which means staff needs to be sent there, which means WE are understaffed. For now I only cover Quebec one day a week, but I often end up doing overtime, on top of having to learn new duties to cover for the missing people. I have been more or less permanently on the register for two months now, and it is a lot of things I had to learn and master VERY quickly.

And that kills me dead. Not just me - if I was simply tired, my creativity would take over. It always does. But it kills my creativity dead as well - I stare at beads and nothing come out. I simply just want to sleep or stare at a movie or something.

Add to that computer troubles and you make Audrey a sad panda who would rather play with pandas than be productive.

Im not looking for sympathy here, but I am hoping to apologize, especially to Lisa, for the lack of pieces and for bending the rules a little bit. I've brought nothing especially for this, but I've used things from my bead stash. I had so many pieces planned, so many lovely things I wanted to do with the amazing soup I was sent, but only one and an half of them wanted to come out in time. I might finish the second tonight, but it will probably be too dark to take pictures. I will try, however.

Again, I am sorry, Lisa. Had I known the situation at work would be so bad once I came back, I would either have not entered, or made sure to do the pieces in august. I will do more with the soup you sent me, and I will post the pieces gladly.

For now, I will show you guys what I have done. <3

My soup, which I was not smart enough to take proper pictures of before devouring some of it, it made up of blues and greens, of delicious lampwork beads, lucite, and other assorted materials. Yum ! As you might remember, the last time I entered one of Lisa's challenges, I got a blue soup as well, and it is my favorite color. I think she is biased. ;P

What happened with it first was... surprising.

That... is not blue.

I KNOW !

The flower petal was originally blue, and is lucite. Most might have seen earrings in it, but I saw something completely different. I don't claim to know how my brain work, and in a way I am happy to have worked with a color I've never worked with before. The petal and the spiral beads are from Lisa's soup, and the lampwork beads made by the ever-lovely Donna Millard. The chips are amber - it's a very fun material to work with ! I added purple seed beads just for the bit of pop the contrasting color would give. So in spite of having to force myself to sit my ass down and get things done. I managed to challenge myself completely.

Worked very lovely for an overworked and underinspired girl, I would say. I painted the petal with the metallic vintaj patinas, which I am in love with. While I have both Swellegant and Vintaj patinas (and Lisa Liddy's Color Me This line, which I have sadly not experimented with yet), it's the vintaj I go for time and time again unless I need a real patina to work with. It is worth it to own both lines, if you can afford it. If you can't, I would say buy a little bit of both and see which one works for you best.

Please forgive the epic shadows on this - it was late when I got those pics taken. Hopefully you can all see what's going on well enough.

The second piece will be more traditional (well, for me at least), and use more of the actual kit Lisa sent me. The focal is done, through, and I will show you and give you a mind'd eye of my plan.

Everything from this focal, save for the lampwork bead, was from Lisa's kit. My brain is farting and I cannot remember for the life of me who made that amazing bead - if you know, PLEASE do remind me ! The top part was copper I believe, but repainted silver with vintaj patinas. I just can't leave anything alone, can't I ? I am very happy with the focal part because that is more complicated wire-wrapping that I am usually able to accomplish (usually I would have used jump rings, but everything is wired on the main piece. Cool, uh ?

I will probably darken the silver wire a bit to match the metallic paint. The other hole will have dangles off it, be it like the fan piece from my bead soup reveal or straight ones. The top part will also be multi-strand - I am planning for white silk ribbon, with a beading wire strand loaded with more of those delicious blue frosty beads (my very favorites from the kit, I have to admit) and other lovelies I wish to sneak in. I cannot give away everything, no ? ;)

So there it is. Hopefully you have all enjoyed what I had to show, and I would like to apologize once more, especially to Lisa, who is an amazing hostess <3

Audrey in Pinkland

Once upon a time, in a location not so far away from there, there was a girl.

One day, in her wanderings, the young girl fell into a hole - let us call it a rabbit hole, to keep things simple - along with her fuzzy old cat companion. Inside that hole, the girl was entering into a whole new world, and she was confused - and scared, yes, we shall say - by all the new things she had to learn and understand.

But she was not alone.

The queen of hearts was here - a beautiful woman clad in pink from the tip of her hair to the her toes - ready to help and guide all those who entered her realm. The queen of hearts is a busy woman, certainly, but she was always ready to do more, more, always more... Even if it was more than enough, even when the pain set in, she always found the strength within for more, somehow.

Today, the young girl and her cat will honor the queen of hearts.

Dear Lori -

Do you realize how much you do, love ? How much you've done ? For me, for all those of us who are participating today, for everyone ? You give, and give, and give so much - so much time, so much of your knowledge, so much of yourself.

And you've created a community - a community of the likes I thought did not exist anymore, a community of

Thank you.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, for everything you do. For me, for the BSBP, for the Pantone swaps, for the Bead Soup Cafe, for the bead soup store, for the book... for everything. The words do fail me, honestly, and I have no idea how to thank you - how to properly thank you - from a country away. Hopefully the words I can muster will have to do. <3

And for you... Well. You are the only person I'd tolerate wearing pink in my hair for. Im the Princess of Blue, see. <3

With love,

Audrey Bélanger

Bead Soup Blog Party 6 : Reveal #3 - REVEAL !

Well, that was a wild ride. A fun ride, but a wild one.

Last that I have given you a sneak peak of this program, my faithful readers had learned that I was up against  my nemesis, the seed bead. And oh, oh so many seed beads.

Then, as I was working on the first set, something strange happened. Something strange and wonderful, dear readers - I stumbled, I restarted, over and over and then...

And then I figured it out. I learned tricks to make handling the tiny tiny beads a whole lot easier. And then suddenly...

Suddenly, I found myself ordering way too many seed beads.

Gah.

Milla - 1; Audrey - 0. :P

So I would like to thank Milla for showing me that no, seed beads arn't completely and utterly evil. And there are uses for them beyond bead-weaving, which... I might one day attempt, but not quite yet.

Which was not to say there weren't accidents. I have learned, for example, that seed beads explode when you accidentally try to crimp them (doh !). and that not all that glitter is gold. Or raw brass. Sadly, the two metal bits had quite a bit of an accident themselves, which sucked because I had such an awesome idea for them. :<

Without further ado !

For the focal, I wanted to work mostly with what Milla sent me, but still remain minimalist in order for the focal to pop. It just so happened that Bee had sent me a box full of goodies for my birthday. Among those goodies were (gah ! I initially thought) red seed beads.

I made this choker-length piece in order to bring the focal to attention. Used here are all beads Milla sent me beside the red seed beads and the garnet rounds. And now you must understand how I got over my fear of seed beads. By facing it. Over, and over, and over, and over again. By banging my head against the wall, the contusion gave me greater understanding <<. Four strands here, all mostly made of those tiny tiny little beads !

I achieved the tangled look by crimping all the strands to one jump ring, then making a makeshift hook around my monitor (Im a genius). Hooked the jump ring to the hook to give me an anchor point, mixed the strands, then crimped the strand to jump ring #2.

But every good necklace needs a companion, after all. And Milla's clasp was too lovely to hide away.

I just want to pause here and say I love the cloud dome. So, so, very much. No, I didn't get a camera. This is my cellphone doing the trick. :)

So, two pieces and two required components used later, I still had a boatload of seed beads.

Clearly there was only one solution to this.

MAKE MOAR STUFF.

And so, I did.

Please pardon the strange picture. This bracelet utterly and completely refuses to lay down flat, through it wears just fine. I had the loose idea of this for awhile - got the green girl clasp on beadaholique's sale a few weeks back. Seed beads actually worked very, very well, given how small the strands had to be. Purple seed beads, transparent Czech glass, astral pink Swarovski crystals, and copper round beads and spacers. I painted on the sunset with vintaj patinas.

But then I still had so many seed beads !

There was only one solution to this dillemia.

This piece was a massive, lovely experiment. This is a mix of make your own chain and rextile ribbon, working with beads both bigger and smaller than what I usually play with, and a good dose of Swellegant to boot.

The focal, the claps, and the oval links were swellegant'd. The links just loosely sponged with the brass metal coating - the result is as you see above. It's a very interesting look ! The focal and the clasp had a few coats of brass metal paint, then the tiffany green patina solution. Given the heat and humidity here, the patina bloomed very quickly. Then I painted on a mix of caribblan blue and aqua green, with just an hint of blood red for the waterlillies. It gave the flowers a very interesting look once I buffed everything back a bit.

The smaller round had some seed bead wire-wrapped onto. The links were pretty fun to make.

I could have stopped there. I certainly could, and after four pieces in two days, a sane person might have.

Good thing im not renowed for my sanity. ;D

This thing is amazing. This thing is wonderful. This thing is mine until the end of time. True story. I really, really, REALLY love how this piece came out. The focal is an HUGE mother of pearl that was hidden in Bee's box of goodies. By huge I do mean huge, and it needed to be part of a piece that could bear the size of it. I also liked the oriental feel of it, so I brought a fan stamping from the lovely B'Sue that I heat patinaed with my trusty dragon. From there on, I hung chain, strands of seed beads, and more sari from it.

(I have an obsession with sari ribbon. Im not even going to bother denying it.)

....And then once I was done, I remembered that I had meant to use the bigger purple beads Milla had sent me. WHOOPS.(Surely im not the only one who does this.... Right ? Derp.)

And thus, my maddess came to an end. I have many more plans with the delicious soup leftover, of course, but you will have to be patient to see them.

Thank you for getting all the way down here !

Links Challenge Blog Hop - REVEAL !

Hi all, and welcome to my reveal post for Peggy's acrylic links challenge !
This was a very interesting challenge for me, mostly because of the limits I held myself to. First, I wanted to do what I do best - use something in ways that they
aren't meant to be used. ;) So I did not want to use the links as a chain.

Second was that I wanted them to be recognizable as Peggy's links - this meant no coloring, or altering them too much. The mixed media juggernaut in me cried, but it had to be done.
So I stared playing with the links. Stacking them. Flipping them. Even daring to link or two. Then, finally...

I saw a flower.

And therefore, this bracelet was born. :>

Thrift Store Blog Hop - REVEAL !

Hi everybody - welcome to my reveal post for the thrift store blog hop ! This has been a very enlightening hop for me. I used to go to thrift stores with my mother when I was younger, and from my memories, there was very little jewelry there. Turn out my memory was wrong, wrong, WRONG. Not only that, but the two thrift stores in my town are very, very cheap. (Sorry, guys !)

It was a good reminder for me that treasures are everywhere, and that you simply need to look for them !

We had a budget of 1.50$. This is what I started with...

(the necklace, not the star) and a pair of hoop earrings that I forgot to photograph that cost me 1$. I used one hoop, so .50. The necklace I got in a lot that cost me .50 as well, so well within budget !

Now, feel free to scroll to the end if you would prefer. I think I got a little carried away with the wip shots. XD;

Hmmm... What could be possibly done with those two objects ?

...A spider, perhaps ?

Well, that's a strange spider..

Oh, I get it now !

Ta-da. Easy pleasy. ;D

Gilders' paste make dirty fingers. ;P (I forgot to take a before photo-the leaves were bright green)

It's the FIIINAL COUNTTTTTDOWNNNN. (Awesome clasp by Lisa of MetalMeThis. It was raw copper, same process as the leaves to get the color on.)

This is where my brain said "screw this" to the inital plan I had and did it's own thing. I was initially planning to keep this part as-is then string the rest...

...This is what happened instead.

...So I had to think up a plan b. XD

And the end result...

Thanks for taking a look at my piece ! Be sure to visit everyone else, too !

Summer Lovin' Challenge - REVEAL !

Summer lovin' had me a blaaaaaast~

Summer lovin', happened so faaaaaaaast~

Oh ? You're here for the reveal of the Summer Lovin' challenge, not my horrible singing ? I should have known !

Just as a reminder, this is what I started with...

And this is what happened !

But Audrey, I hear you say. That isn't summery at all !

Well, im not going to deny. But take a closer look, will you : What cute little leaves do you see on that adorable little tree up in there ?

MAPLES LEAVES. That's what. Perfectly warranted. Woop woop.

Save for the chain links, the maple leaves and the daisy spacers, everything I used here came from Amy's kit.
I do not usually do mixed metals... But the focal was more or less begging for it. I made my own chain from links off a brass chain I had laying around, brass jump rings and silver wire. The leaves were clear lucite leaves, that I colored with gilders' paste - one of my earliest loves - in colors silver and inca gold.

To finish wish, I ended it with some sari ribbon. I like the almost grungy look of it... Contrasts with the elegance of the chain a bit :>

But by the end, I had two links left over..

Problem solved !

Hope you've enjoyed this, and please visit the other participants ! :D
